What? Publish My Own Ezine?
by Maggie Lietz - Copyright © 2000

I know how you feel. Why publish an ezine when there are literally hundreds of thousands already available throughout the Internet? The answer is simple...

None of those ezines belong to YOU personally!

Do you have a website? Do you have a product? Do you have an existing mailing list? If you answered yes to all three, then you'd better get a move on. Publishing an ezine is the absolute best FREE advertising you can have.

In the event you answered no to any or all of the questions, then you've REALLY got your work cut out for you. But those are issues that should be addressed in an entirely separate article. For right now, let's just concentrate on the ezine itself.

What's that you say? You can't write? Ok... maybe you don't consider yourself a "professional" writer. But you HAVE written letters (or emails) to friends and family, yes? Well, there you go. In fact, your should approach your ezine writing in exactly the same light.

Think of it as merely talking with a friend or relative, letting them know what's going on, providing them with helpful information, additionally announcing the location of certain beneficial products or services.

Keep this in mind... an ezine isn't meant to win a Pulitzer prize (although there's no doubt some of them very well could). In general, an ezine can be anything you want it to be. Some contain nothing more than a few helpful hints plus a long list of advertisements. Others contain various news tidbits plus a long list of advertisements. Still others are nothing MORE than a long list of advertisements.

The point is, your ezine doesn't have to do anything more than perhaps inform, enlighten, and entertain. How LONG your list of advertisements may be depends on how many people are willing to purchase ad space. And even if no one is willing to do so, it still affords you the opportunity to advertise YOUR product or service. So let's talk about the basics...

Your first priority should be the name of your ezine. Choose something catchy. Something which compels a potential subscriber to say..."WOW! I can't WAIT for my first issue to arrive!" Assuming you currently have an existing website and/or product or service, you more than likely already have the makings for a good ezine title.

If you haven't already done so, choose a theme for your publication. Naturally, the subject matter should directly correspond to that of your current business, hobby, interest, etc. But you need to decide what type of information you're going to dispense. Humor? News bulletins? Helpful hints? Technical advice? You decide.

Now we get to the juicy part. Content. If you don't already have some, don't dispair. Throughout the Internet there are all sorts of free filler, general content, and articles, including this one. ;-)

For the latter, here are two content-rich resources to get you started: www.ezinearticles.com and http://ezinenewswire.com.

Also, check out existing ezines that have a similar theme to your own. You might consider subscribing to several, affording you the opportunity to see exactly what the so-called competition has to offer. The directory at www.freezineweb.com alone should keep you busy for some time.

Ok. You've done your research, you've chosen a killer title for your ezine, and you've got a basic idea of what kind of theme you want to address. Aside from the writing itself, let's talk about getting your ezine in the public eye.

On your website, you need to supply your viewers with an easy, convenient way to subscribe (in essence, allow them to join your mailing list). This form should be in clear view on every important page of your website.

You'll notice that I said "form", not email address. That's because Internet surfers are generally impulsive by nature. Give them even the slightest opportunity to think about your offer and you could very well lose them. They're much more likely to take a few moments to type in their name and email address and hit "submit" than bother to write you an email requesting a subscription.

Once you have an ezine up and running, a good practice would be to gather future content ahead of time. You might even consider composing several completed issues in advance. That way, when Aunt Martha (whom you haven't seen for ten years) pays an unexpected visit, you won't find yourself hunched over the keyboard in the middle of the night, trying desperately to meet the next ezine issue deadline.

Which brings us to another point... when and how often you should publish your ezine. Currently, Monday and Friday are considered high traffic ezine days, so you might want to think about middle or end of the week delivery.

With regard to how often you should publish, that's entirely up to you. Granted, you want to remain in the mind of your subscriber, but you also need to consider their willingness to receive. Don't overload their inbox. On the other hand, you don't want so much time to pass that your subscriber forgets who you are.

In general, pick a specific time frame (weekly, bi-monthly, monthly) as well as a certain delivery day. More importantly, stick to the program. If you've indicated that your ezine comes out on a Tuesday, make certain your subscribers receive it on that particular day. Aside from the value of your ezine content, it's important to instill confidence and trust. After all, your ongoing success depends on your credibility.

One other thing. Due to the increase in the number of spam filters (these are programs viewers put in place in an attempt to prevent receiving tons of junk mail), countless email-based ezines aren't reaching their intended subscribers.

In order to combat this problem, more and more ezine publishers are placing their ezines online, either in addition to their email version or as an exclusive alternative. That way, they don't have to worry about what words are used within the content of the ezine and whether or not they will pass through any "filtering" system.

If that's something you plan to do and would like original custom-made ezine web pages that will give your online version a highly professional edge, make sure you check out Plug-In Newsletter Templates at http://www.ebookhelper.com/pnt/index.html.

There's no doubt that creating an ezine is relatively simple. But improving and maintaining that publication requires dedication and hard work. Of course, the ultimate reward is well worth the effort.

So what's the next best thing to owning your own website? Owning your very own ezine!
