Success Formula 3 - Opt-In List Marketing
by Maggie Lietz - Copyright © 2007

Before we get into the in's and out's of this formula, let me say that whether or not you choose this success option is based on two things: 1) that you're willing to invest in a system that has no end, and 2) that you're willing to invest in a system that has no end.

No, I didn't make a mistake there. I just wanted to get your undivided attention...

There's no question whatsoever that this formula for success is extremely effective. Not only that, it's recommended by "three out of four gurus".

The only problem is, it requires ongoing attention, not just in the beginning but forever and ever and ever. Basically, once you set this in motion, there's no going back or even stopping the process.

Well, I guess if you get run over by a bus or your computer blows up and you can't afford another one, you're off the hook. Other than that, this formula requires that you're willing to be in it for the long haul.

I'll explain the actual formula for success in a moment, but first, here are the components.

1. build an opt-in mailing list

2. publish a newsletter

3. sell products to mailing list members and subscribers

Sounds simple enough, right? Well, I guess that depends on your point of view. Yes, the concept itself is simple. But what's not so simple is building the opt-in list and then using it to generate income.

Under normal circumstances, it takes considerable time to gain thousands of quality (or even non-quality) names and email addresses. Of course, most people don't want to wait that long.

But that's not the issue. The only thing that matters is results and this particular formula, however powerful it may be, doesn't happen to have any extreme shortcuts.

The good news is, once you've got this system in place and operating smoothly, it's simply a matter of repeating the same tasks over and over.

Here's how the system works...

You start by investing your efforts in building an opt-in mailing list. Next, you establish a newsletter with subject matter that revolves around whatever type of product or service you choose.

From that point, you begin sending both the newsletter and periodic ads and promotion messages to the people on your list. Overall, the primary purpose is to turn those subscribers into buyers.

The key ingredient, though, is to attract somewhat targeted people in the first place. So here's the formula that spells success.

Create an exit pop-window that not only announces your newsletter but provides the means by which viewers can subscribe. More than likely, you'll also have a form on your web pages, but the pop-up window will increase sign-ups by a much larger percentage.

If you're wondering why the window should appear when someone exits your web page, it's simply because most viewers who are first arriving on your website will probably have something else on their mind. Once they've satisfied that purpose, they're more likely to take a few moments to subscribe to a newsletter.

Assuming they haven't already done so through one of the duplicate forms on the web pages, the exit pop-up window is a means of getting their final attention just prior to them drifting off into cyberspace.

The content you place in that pop-up window is crucial to not only the amount of subscribers you get but the quality as well. Basically, you want to attract viewers who qualify as prospective buyers.

If they don't qualify, the odds of getting them to purchase something are pretty slim no matter how often you make contact in the future. Needless to say, the entire formula will be doomed right from the start.

So the first criteria for pop-up content is getting their attention. The best way to do that is with a killer headline and a 3D image. And yes, you do need some sort of image to represent your newsletter, just like you would an ebook or software program.

Aside from that, you should include a couple of paragraphs of text describing the newsletter along with a bulleted list of benefits. That way, the viewer will know exactly what they're getting.

What you're doing is verbally "selling" them a subscription. Don't forget. There are hundreds of thousands of newsletters out there. You have to convince a viewer why subscribing to yet another one is worth their consideration.

Even though this goes against the grain of expert opinion, I don't personally think you should offer a freebie just to get people to subscribe. My overall reasoning is that you'll attract less qualified viewers, ones who are only interested in gaining something for free.

On the other hand, a free item will definitely increase the number of sign-ups. Just be prepared for the extra effort it's going to take to turn those types of individuals into actual buyers.

Plus, the success of this particular game relies on sheer numbers. Yes, you want targeted subscribers, but you also want to build a formidable mailing list. The more people who receive your newsletter and ad messages, the higher the income potential.

However...

The most important aspect of this entire formula is the relationship you build with your subscribers. Why? Because the power of this system lies in your ability to get people to purchase something based on your recommendation.

And that's exactly why this particular system takes time to develop. One, in building the mailing list itself. And two, in gaining people's trust and having them rely on you for quality information and products.

Once you develop that kind of relationship, you can count on receiving a large amount of sales each and every time you promote something through your newsletter or periodic solo ad messages.

And as long as you continue to provide valuable content and recommendations, this type of system will not only generate income, it can only increase as time goes on.

More subscribers + product recommendations = more income

There's no limit to how far you can take this. But one thing is certain. There are probably more people getting rich off this type of system than any other marketing method on the Internet.

One word of advice, though. Don't even think about initiating this process if it's not something that genuinely appeals to you.

If you're only in it for the income potential, you're going to have a rough road ahead of you. Trust me. It takes a special kind of individual to meet publication deadlines week after week, month after month, year after year.

Is there an alternative? Yes. Forget about producing a newsletter and simply concentrate on building a private opt-in mailing list. It may take you a bit longer to reach the kind of income level you'd like, but at least you won't have to commit to a regular publication.

Instead, you can implement the same system of contacting people on an opt-in mailing list and developing a solid and trusted relationship. The only major adjustment you'll need to make is finding something other than the benefits of a newsletter to encourage qualified viewers to sign-up for your list (the content of the pop-up window).

But regardless of whether you produce a newsletter or not, you need to accept the fact that this type of system takes time to build and cultivate. If you're willing to do that, you can definitely count on enjoying one of the most powerful Internet income-producing systems available.
